The 2015 TGL Fitness Goals

Anyone else already sick of being back at work and ready for a vacation? We don’t have any holidays off until May and Memorial Day, so this is the longest stretch of the year, and the worst. I crave days off, they really help me get through the day. But it’s the start of the new year, and everyone has been posting their goals and resolutions. I figure it’s time for me to share mine as well!

The 2015 This Guy’s Life Fitness Goals
I broke all of my goals into three categories: fitness, financial and personal. I’m still working on the other two categories, but I can share my fitness-related goals. Without further ado, here they are:

  • Run 1000 Miles
  • Bike 1000 Miles
  • Swim 50 Miles
  • Break 2 hours in a half marathon
  • Break 1:30 in a sprint triathlon

OK, now for some more detail on each of these…

Run 1000 Miles: This has been a goal for the past two years, and I missed it both times. In 2013 I ran 725 miles, and in 2014 I finished up the year with 810. This year, I’m going to do it! I know I need around 20 miles per week, but my ultimate goal is to be closer to 30. That would really help build my base for my future running plans.

Bike 1000 Miles: I had no biking-related goals last year, because I didn’t even own a bike until April. I think 1000 is a realistic and completely doable distance. I have a sub-goal of doing like 1/3 of it on the open road.

Swim 50 Miles: This goal is about consistency with swimming. I basically swam from January to June last year, ignoring the final six months, and I ended up with 19 miles. With a build in distance and some consistency, this should be doable as well.

Break 2 hours in a half: Another long-standing goal. Last year I came damn bloody close, with a 2:01:55 at Germantown. This year I’m hopeful I can knock this out with my first half in April, but if not, I’ve got two and possibly three other opportunities to do it. Speedwork will be the key.

Break 1:30 in a sprint tri: I felt this was a realistic goal last year too….and then I spent 15 minutes swimming 400 yards….and I biked at 13MPH. Even a slight uptick in biking speed should allow me to get this one too. I just have to find some good sprints to do near me.

And there you have it, the five fitness goals for the year. I’ll do regular posts to keep everyone up to date on my progress. I’ve also entered the distance-based goals into Garmin Connect to help keep me accountable there.
